Music at the Kennett First Presbyterian Church is an essential part of our worship. Our musical offerings reflect the interest of the participants, and we have the ability to offer music programs for all ages, with children’s choirs, hand-bell choirs for youth and adults, and our adult choir.

Glenda Raspberry has been our Organist since the fall of 1972. Just as comfortable on digital keyboard as the organ, Glenda has an amazing talent for original arrangements that you will hear nowhere else.

Viretta Sexton has been our Music Director since the Spring of 1973. As a music educator, she led Kennett High School’s choral music program to a position of preeminence in the state. After her retirement from teaching in the schools, her expertise stayed in demand, both as a clinician and as a vocal coach. Her extensive knowledge of musical literature and singing technique allows her to bring out the best in our choirs.

Our worship uses a wide variety of musical styles. Traditional hymns may form the core, but you will hear everything from the classical composers, such as Bach and Handel, to spirituals, to modern a capella arrangements.

The small, but mighty, adult choir has most of the responsibility, with the occasional Children’s choir, youth soloist, or adult soloist, to help out.

We also have a gospel quartet that began as an entertainment for our annual Bazaar. We have affectionately nicknamed this group, “The White Bread Quartet,” and they periodically bring a different chord to some of our Sunday services.

An instrumental ensemble may even surprise you one fine Sunday, if the music cries out for it.

Brooke Privett has attended the Kennett First Presbyterian Church her entire life. She particularly enjoys performing pre-service music on occasion. Brooke serves as Principal Trumpet in the Southeast Symphony Orchestra, the Southeast Wind Symphony and the Paducah Symphony in Paducah, Kentucky. She also plays in the Kennett Municipal Band.

The highlight of our year is the Christmas Eve worship service. The Candlelight Carol Service brings together former choir members, Christmas visitors who studied with Viretta, and those from other local church choirs who join our regulars for a powerful musical worship experience.

This sketch of our church’s organ pipes was done in 1987 by Mark Oakley, at the request of his father...and one of our former pastors...The late Reverend Allen Oakley. Reverend Oakley used the sketch on the program cover for the annual Christmas Eve Service, and the church has used it many times, ever since. Mark is now a Professor of Art and Graphic Design at Forest Park Community College and Maryville University in St. Louis. He returns regularly to worship with us.
